The B. List

MUSEUM OF MODERN ART, 11 W. 53rd St. (212-708-9400). Through May 15
John Szarkowski: Photographs presents work by the critic and curator (he worked at MOMA for almost thirty years),
from Midwestern scenes of the nineteen-forties through a 2002 shot taken in upstate New York.

WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART, Madison Ave. at 75th St. (800-944-8639), through May 28. Open Wednesdays, Thursdays,
and weekends, 11 to 6, and Fridays, 1 to 9
Philippe Vergne and Chrissie Iles curated Day for Night, the 2006 Biennial. More than a hundred artists are
represented, including Pierre Huyghe, Marilyn Minter, Sturtevant, and Troy Brauntuch.
Rahter disappointing if you ask me, a lot of the newcomers have been around on the European art circus for a
long time.

ZABRISKIE, 41 E. 57th St. 212-752-1223, through April 29
Tomoko Sawada
Sawada, from Kobe, Japan, is almost thirty, but she has no trouble passing as a schoolgirl. Sawada’s shifts of
identity may not resonate here as acutely as Cindy Sherman’s or Nikki S. Lee’s, but she tweaks stereotypes with
the best of them.

ROTH, 160A E. 70th St. 212-717-9067. Through April 29.
1968: ALL IN A DREAM
In a show that attests to the suggestive power of the anonymous snapshot, nearly five hundred of them are hung
unframed and side by side for an exhibition that invites us to draw our own conclusions. The pictures were rejected
or forgotten at a photo processor outside of Boston, and some of them are over- or double-exposed, but these
avant-garde accidents are mere ripples in a sea of fascinating ordinariness: new puppies, dead deer, smiling bride,
birthday cake. Since the year is 1968, other ripples—a peace sign, love beads, a Dylan poster, and lots of sailors
and soldiers—stud the deceptively bland surface like unexploded bombs.

GLADSTONE, 515 W. 24th St. 212-206-9300. Through May 13.
Matthew Barney
No photography but one of my all time favorites. I know, I know he is the superstar of the art scene and Björks
man, but I think he is brilliant and really deserves to be there. The ultimate master of storytelling and his
drawings are wonderful. Absolute must see show!!!

SPERONE WESTWATER, 415 West 13 Street, New York, NY 10014, (212) 999-7337 fax(212) 999-7338, Tuesday through Saturday 10 am to 6 pm
Andrew Grassie, PRIVATE, 27 April 2006 through 30 June 2006
Laurie Simmons, 27 April 2006 through 30 June 2006

LEICA 670 Broadway 5th fl, 10012, 212/777-3051, Tues-Sat 12-6. Apr 21-Jun 3
A Photographic Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Sigmund Freuds Birth.

SOUTH STREET SEAPORT MUSEUM 12 Fulton St 10038, 212/748-8725, daily 10-6. Through Oct 21:
Shelley Seccombe: The Lost Waterfront: The Hudson River Piers, 1972-1982.

YOSSI MILO, 525 W 25th St 10001, 212/414-0370, Tues-Sat 10-6. Apr 6-May 6:

P.S. 1 CONTEMPORARY ART CENTER 22-25 Jackson Ave, Long Island City 11101, 718/784-2084, Thur-Mon 12-6.
Through May 29: Wolfgang Tillmans Freedom From the Known.
(Long Island City, New York – January 12, 2006) Freedom From the Known is Wolfgang Tillmans first exhibition
for an American museum, and unlike any he has ever previously mounted. The exhibition focuses on the artists
purely abstract photographs.
