From South Dakota with Love

Monday, June 27th, 2005

South Dakota

Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer in all its glory: family vacations, water ices, cookouts with friends and - of course - some seriously great photo opportunities.

My girlfriend, Bridget, and I decided to kick the summer off by packing up the cameras and leaving the craziness of NYC for her family’s glorious South Dakota farm. Aside from rocking some fierce photography, risking my life on a 4-wheeler and bottle feeding a calf, I had one more very important mission to accomplish.

After two beautifully fun and fulfilling years of dating, I knew I found true love and was ready to pop the question. And, it sure as heck wasn’t, “What’s your favorite Lomo!?” On Sunday, May 29th, 2005, on a long walk in the countryside, with 20 head of cattle as my witnesses, I got down on one knee and proposed to the love of my life. The word “yes” kicked off a rush of blissful emotions that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

The photos above, including Bridget on the night of our engagement, are from our memorable trip. Be sure to check out the complete collection of color-bursting images in the Flavorphoto Gallery. All fisheye images were taken with the Lomo Fisheye camera — others are a mixture from the Canon Digital Rebel and the Olympus Stylus Epic.

Cheers,

March of the Penguins

March of the Penguins

Every year, the Emperor Penguins leave their ocean homes and slowly march through snow and sleet to their traditional Antarctic breeding grounds. This epic movie will be released in NYC on June 24th and is narrated by Morgan Freeman. Unless your heart is as cold as their treacherous ice-bound realm, then this touching movie will seriously make you cry. I haven’t even seen it yet, and my keyboard is already soaked with tears. Check out the trailer.

Gotham Girls Roller Derby

If you’re around town on July 15th, it simply behooves you to attend the Gotham Girls Roller Derby rally in the Bronx. These girls are cute, sassy, and tough enough to elbow bash you without a second thought. I may be in love. Check out their photo page to see more. Image above by Michael Gee.

How To :: Sunny 16 Rule

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

So, you’ve got a rocking old camera off of Ebay or a garage sale and oh snap, it’s got no meter. Well meine freunde, it’s about time for you to get acquainted with the Sunny 16 rule.
It states that, on a sunny day, you can set your aperture to f/16 and your shutter speed equal to your film ASA speed. So, if you’re rocking downtown on a bright day and shooting 100ASA Fuji, then set your aperture to f/16 and your shutter to 1/125. This Apogee page has a nice & smooth description of how it all works.

Last Night\'s Party

Suffice it to say that this dude parties harder than just about anyone out there. Merlin rolls out nearly every night with a Canon D.Rebel XT and shoots up-high portraits of young New Yorkers - from the seriously attractive to the arguably insane. His site is constantly updated with new shots every day or so. Take a look.
